Biliary Atresia and Nutrition

It is not uncommon for a child with biliary atresia to have digestion and nutritional problems. A child with biliary atresia may be unable to digest fats properly because bile is not able to drain adequately from the liver to the intestines. Since the child’s digestion of fats is impaired vitamin deficiencies can also be a problem. Nutrition is very important when digestion is impaired with a child suffering from Biliary Atresia.

Liquigen

LiquigenLiquigen is an emulsion consisting of approximately 50% MCT oil and 50% water. Liquigen may be used in conditions requiring high energy where fat absorption is impaired and where a high MCT intake is indicated. Liquigen can be used as part of the MCT ketogenic diet.  Liquigen is suitable for children over one year of age and adults.

The quantity of Liquigen should be determined by a clinician or dietitian only and is dependent on the age, bodyweight and medical condition of the patient. 

Liquigen can be used to fortify a wide variety of drinks and foods and is also useful as an energy enhancer in tube and sip feeds.

Liquigen can be used straight from the bottle or as a milk substitute and can easily be flavoured eg. milkshake syrups.

Liquigen may require dilution for children under 5 years of age. 

Must only be used under strict medical supervision.  Not intended for use as the sole source of nutrition.  Not for parenteral use. 

 

 

Polyjoule

Poly-Joule is a mixture of glucose polymers (maltodextrin) which provides a readily absorbed source of energy with a low osmotic strength and bland taste.

Poly-Joule is a soluble white powder which is free from protein, fat, sucrose, lactose, fructose, galactose and gluten. Poly-Joule has a low electrolyte content.

Poly-Joule can be added to most liquid and semi-solid foods to increase their energy and carbohydrate content.

Poly-Joule is not nutritionally complete and should not be used as the only source of nutrition.

Poly-Joule can be added to hot and cold foods, hot and cold liquids and to naso-gastric feeds.

Solid foods:
Poly-Joule can be sprinkled on foods such as cereal and fruit of mixed in foods such as mashed potato, stews, scrambled eggs and custards.

Liquids:
Add Poly-Joule to liquids such as milk or fruit juices and stir until dissolved.

For infants and young children:
Use in accordance with instructions from your doctor or dietitian.

 

Monogen

MonogenA milk protein-based powder, low in fat, and high in medium chain triglycerides (MCT). A medical food for individuals over one year of age.

Main Features
• 25% of calories from fat
• 90% of fat as MCT
• Excellent ratio of essential fatty acids (n6:n3 ratio of 4.6:1)
• Contains complete profile of vitamins and minerals including trace elements

Indications
• Long chain fatty acid oxidation disorders
